Boathouse gets a new look

Over the past few days, the Hull Rowing Club boathouse was given a new appearance.  Lead by Stuart Beards, the team of HUBC lads, Kieran Barnes, Daniel Wall, Daniel Reynolds + Mr Reynolds, Joe Edwards, Tim Sparks, Stuart Goldfinch, Tom Davies, Bernard Gammon & Jai Sharda set out to improve the boathouse. They started with the intentions of just painting the blades but finished with a vast amount of improvements. Below are the changes which have been made:

[1] The racking has been adjusted and there is now enough room for coxed fours on the top shelf. When finished in September, there will be two free racks available.

[2] The blades have been painted.

[3] Various notice boards have been introduced for HRC & HUBC

[4] The interior and exterior have been repainted.

[5] The bar area has been painted and cleared in preparation for September, where up-to-date photos and club photos will be put up.

[6] The signing in/out desk has moved to where the wellies were, along with the trestles now located by the hosepipe. The wellies are now out of the way at the back of the boathouse.

[7] The trestles have been painted

[8] The oars are due to be re-labeled for September

[9] The life jackets have moved to a new rack found by the signing out desk, so there is now no excuse for coxes not to sign out after picking up their life jacket.

[10] The launch key has gained a new kill cord and cork float.

24 Hour Sponsored Row

Rowers from the Hull University Boat Club have successfully completed a 24 hour indoor sponsored rowing event; an outright gruelling test of mental and physical strength.

On the 29th January 2010, a team of 30 rowers participated in an endurance challenge so as to generate substantial funds for the continued enhancement of facilities and equipment available for rowing in Hull.  The event was executed on two ergometers operating in constant hour long relay shifts for the entire duration of 24 hours. All members managed to maintain a credible stroke rate throughout to ensure coverage of a considerable distance of 689.51km (the equivalent of travelling from Hull to Hamburg, Germany).

Boat Club President, Stuart Beards, offered an accurate evaluation: "It was an amazing overall team effort. Everyone was exhausted by the end after such a demanding and virtually sleepless marathon. There were periods when everyone was tiring and the amount of rowing ahead of us seemed endless, especially during the early hours of the morning, but we managed to get through it and we were thrilled by the substantial support from all our sponsors".

The rowers undertook the challenge in an attempt to raise £1,500 towards the inherently high costs of Boat Club maintenance. So far the total raised is £1919.03. The majority of this sum will contribute to the purchase of a new safety launch which is essential for coaching purposes. Hopefully, through future fundraising initiatives HUBC will sustain expansion through procurement of sculling oars and boat trailer.

Finally, the committee wish to take this opportunity to thank all those who generously donated for the event.

- Update - New coxed four oars costing £1200 have been ordered with the money raised so far.

Ergothon make £800

After a busy weekend racing at Newark the annual ergothon took place on Monday 7th December in the entrance of the Students Union building. With the aim to erg from hull to London in a day, a total distance of 253.6 km, the whole club got involved to row part of the way. If members were not pouring blood and sweat into rowing they had buckets out collecting donations, hoping to raise as much money as possible for the club.

It was a very successfully day, as the club managed to ergo a little way beyond London but also raised just over £800, more than double what we raised last year (and a few Euros made their way into the buckets as well!).  HUBC would like to say thanks to everyone who gave up a little part of their day, or money to help support the club.

Another new boat for HUBC

Stuart Beards has struck jackpot once more through managing to secure another free boat for HUBC. In an era of unremitting financial obstacles, the latest addition to the boathouse has already proved to be a valuable new asset to the club in terms of raising morale.

Following an internet advertisement, Rob Jephcote of Burton Leander Rowing Club agreed to donate an exquisite Aylings coxed four. As an HUBC alumni member he was evidently sympathetic to the difficulties poised in attempting to introduce innovative fundraising techniques and subsequent problems in raising the adequate pecuniary support required to purchase necessary equipment or upgrade facilities. It is hoped that through increasing the resources available, the support for both University and community rowing will continue to thrive. Hence, on Sunday 13th November 2009 Mens Captain, Louis Casserley and Treasurer, Daniel Scott, were part of the fortunate delegation that ensured the boat safely arrived at its new home in Hull.

Subsequent to visiting Burton-on-Trent, the HUBC restoration team are currently conducting minimal repairs in preparation for the York Small Boats Headon the 22nd November 2009. Beyond this, several crews are eagerly anticipating the possibility of utilising the boat for water training purposes on a regular basis in the future.
The Club members would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Burton Leander Boat Club for presenting a wonderful opportunity to raise the profile of the sport and enable the sustainable development of rowing on the River Hull.
