Tees Regatta
HUBC arrived at Stockton-on-tees excited and confident of racing competitively over the 850m Tees Regatta course. With extra determination to put on an outstanding performance for the last regatta of our season, the new crews had the added pressure of maintaining the brilliant performance at last year’s Tees regatta. Luckily the crews did not disappointed, boasting 5 wins and numerous 2nd and 3rd place finishes.
The start of the day saw Hull’s two Men’s Novice 4+ competing in demanding weather. Hull A consisting of, Daniel Reynolds, Frederick Cramer, Thomas Davies, Will Garton and cox Sam Meredith allied with Hull B: Will Richardson, Jack Plum, Ben Rea, James Smith and Katie Essak in her coxing debut for HUBC. Both crews put in valiant performances winning all their heats respectively and in the final their supremacy was unrelenting. Hull A ended the regatta finishing first and collecting their first British Rowing points now taking the crew to IM3 for the next season, while Hull B ended the race in a highly respectable 3rdposition.
With the benchmark set, the men’s and women’s captain (Joe Edwards & Kieran Barnes) took to the water in the M2x IM3. It was a straight final between HUBC and Lincoln Rowing Centre consisting of a familiar face in the form of old blade Bernard Gammon. In the closing reaches of the race it was HUBC in front by a seat with only 250m to go, unfortunately in the final 25m an unforced error allowed Bernard & co to steal HUBCs deserved first place. Their spirits where downed after the unfortunate events, though losing to an old blade gave little comfort in their 2nd place finish.
Up next where the girls pair of Kate O’Brien & Rebecca Chappell; having being self dubbed Hull’s A pair they had much to prove. In the straight, close battled and comical final even the winner’s hats couldn’t pull off a win for the girls as the more experienced crew of Leicester Rowing Club took first place with the girls placing a highly respectable 2nd after their first ever race in a pair.
In an attempt to demonstrate the diversity available in HUBC this season, the senior girls with their impressive performance at BUCS earlier this year entered the W4x category instead of their usual 4+; this is the first time the senior girls have raced a quad but they are always up for a challenge. After a less than perfect start the girls (Kayleigh Baker, Kate O’Brien, Rebecca Chappell and Katie Essak) showed their experience and composure taking the lead whilst passing under Infinity Bridge. Pushing off the crew challenging for first, they secured their victory in emphatic style. This race was more than just a victory for the girls as on a sadder note, it would be there last race together as a crew, and what a way to go out!
In the most highly entered and spirited race of the regatta the Nov 1x had a lot of competition for Tim Sparks and Daniel Scott to knock down. Daniel Scott got through the quarter finals but regrettably knocked out later in an exceedingly contested semi final. Tim Sparks however had the best success of all of HUBC winning the Nov 1x after having a dodgy start coming through the repêchage. This like the Mens Nov 4+ means that Tim is no longer a novice sculler and gained two British Rowing points. He instantly put them to use as he entered and later won the IM3 1x comfortably without any real contest from the other scullers!
After the men’s disappointing end in the double it was time to turn that frown upside down and get competing in the final race of the day, the Elite 4+. The crew consisting of Maximilian Rolfes, Alexander Trautrims, Joe Edwards, Kieran Barnes and cox Sam Meredith where in a straight final against the highly rated Chester Le Street crew. From the start even with the unrelenting head wind it was bow ball to bow ball between the crews. However coming up to Infinity Bridge HUBC took it up a gear and with the help of the fanatical supporters dashing alongside the river bank, HUBC ended winning the race by a single boat length. Maximilian couldn’t contain his enjoyment seeking to copy the oxford crew of late by standing up in the boat with blade in hand to the pleasure of the on lookers and thus fulfilling a comprehensive routing at Tees Regatta.
Surprisingly for HUBC they furthered their incredible win tally at Tees with another superb display from all crews involved. Undoubtedly HUBC where the most successful club at the regatta winning five races and being able to boast the most successful individual athlete in Tim Sparks. This was a great way for HUBC to end to end the year, and with these promising results under our belts, it allows us to look forward confidently into the next academic year.

BUCS 2011
The annual British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) regatta remains the largest event in the HUBC calendar. After an extensive training camp at Runcorn, the crews and supporters came together at the nation water sports centre in Nottingham, for the three day event.
Saturday started with time trails for the men’s intermediate 1x followed by the men’s beginner 4+. In the men’s singles all three of our boats; Kieran Barnes, Stuart Beards & Tim Sparks, all qualified through time trials through the time semi-finals. Kieran Barnes led the HUBC men with a time of 05:59.89 followed closely by Stuart Beards at 06:00:24 and, soon after, Tim Sparks. This time trial was followed by the men’s beginner coxed fours. Whilst none of the three crews qualified for the chance of a medal position, the top two crews were eligible for the new, straight final system (unable to win a medal). In Hull A, Daniel Reynolds, Frederick Cramer, Thomas Davies, Will Garton and cox Tegan Pereira-Rego came in with a qualifying time of 5 minutes 31 seconds, followed only seconds later by Hull B with Jamie Ford, James Smith, Thomas Bailey, Thomas Hanna and cox Sam Meredith. Sadly the third crew, despite putting in a valiant effort just missed out on the next stage of racing. The crew consisted Will Richardson, Jack Plum, Ben Rea, Izaak Morriz Docker and cox Emily Rawlins.
Whilst the results had promised HUBC some more races, sadly the weather escalated and became so extreme that the BUCS officials cancelled most of the races excluding finals. And whilst the men’s singles had qualified for the semi finals, only the top qualifying times, deemed to have a medal chance, were allowed to race in the final. As a result HUBC had no more races for the day so the club proceeded with their plans for a fun night out in Nottingham for supporters and rowers who were finished for the weekend.
Sunday’s racing was to include the women’s beginner coxed fours, however after a challenging Runcorn Training Camp and conflicting schedules the crew decided to remove itself from racing though continue to train in hopes of a win at next years BUCS regatta.
Monday was perhaps the most successful day of racing. All three crews racing qualified including the women’s coxed four (Kayleigh Baker, Kate O’Brien, Rebecca Chappell, Katie Essak and cox Tegan Pereira-Rego) and the two men’s intermediate pairs (Joe Edwards and Kai Wenner, Kieran Barnes and Stuart Beards). The women’s crew successfully beasted it down the course in the semi finals, coming back from 6th position to narrowly missing out on the qualifying third position. The last 250 meters were in fact so epic that even the commentator commented on the successful comeback and the spirits among the crew were high despite not quite making it to the final.
The women’s racing occurred at the same time as the men’s intermediate pair competition, a much discussed clash between the two crews. Although the two men’s crews made it to the semi finals they narrowly missed out on the final medal positions. They raced gallantly with Barnes and Beards just beating Wenner and Edwards to the finish line in their respective semi finals.
Yet again Bucs 2011 was a successful event, where the racing and crews had a fantastic time, was again cheered on by the loyal and vocal supporting members of the club. Whilst HUBC may not have won any medals, the times and crews showed great promise for the next years racing.

Runcorn Sping Head 2011
On Saturday 12th March, Hull University Boat Club left Yorkshire in the early hours of the morning to compete at a head race on the other side of the country. Home to Stuart Beards (President), the hubc travelled to Cheshire to compete at the Runcorn Spring Head 2011, a 6,000m race on the River Weaver.
Division A saw two of the men’s novice coxed fours race along with the women’s novice four racing as IM3. Coxed by S. Beards, the first of the two men’s novice coxed fours (D. Reynolds, W. Garton, T. Davies, F. Cramer) put in an outstanding performance over a long an exhausting 6,000m. Starting at the back of the coxed fours, the crew knew if they wanted to win they would have to catch the stronger crews ahead. Pushing hard throughout the race the crew gained on the novice fours ahead, however a stronger Trentham crew managed to finish the race 12 seconds faster with the men’s 4+ crew finishing the race with a time of 22:30.16mins in second place.
The second of the men’s novice fours, (W. Richardson, I. Morris-Docker, B. Rea, J. Plumb, cox; S. Meredith) also put in an exceptional performance over the 6,000m. Racing in the new boat, the crew set off strong from the start and although they had not had chance to fully train together before the race, they managed to finish the race in 27:15.15mins.
Due to the late arrival the women’s crew were one of the last boats to arrive at the starting line, however remaining calm the crew (O. Fehily, H. Silver, M. Casey, Galloway, cox; E.Rawlins) completed the 6,000m race in a time of 30:50.96min, a very respectable time for a crew which has had little water time together. Women’s Captain Kieran Barnes was very pleased with their performance and expects them to continue this form at the BUCS Regatta in May.
Division B in the afternoon saw a further two men’s crews race. The Men’s IM3 4+ crew (S. Beards, K. Wenner, A. Trautrims, K. Barnes, cox; D. Reynolds) put in an excellent performance over the 6,000m. S. Beards was keen to impress his home club and with a thrilling crew performance, the men’s four managed to push away from the chasing crews and gain on a strong Manchester University crew. Finishing the race with a time of 21:21.95min, the IM3 4+ came first and picked up hubc’s first set of medals for 2011.
The final crew racing at Runcorn was another Men’s Novice coxed four (J. Ford, J. Smith, T. Bailey, T. Hanna, cox; S. Meredith). Due to a mix up with the women’s boat from the previous race, no one realised the boat was still rigged to bow side until it was already on the water. With time pressing on and a 7km paddle to the start line from the boathouse, the crew dealt with the situation as best as possible and raced to the start line. As the last boat to arrive at the start the men’s novice four hardly had time to relax before spinning and racing back the way they had just come. However, with their racing faces on the crew didn’t complain and pulled off hard from the starting line giving it their all. The crew finished 3rd overall and completed the head in 26:34.56mins, a terrific performance for the men’s boat.
Overall HUBC had an excellent days racing and with BUCS now around the corner every crew showed determination to train harder and to push harder.

White Rose Head 2011
On the 29th January 2011 HUBC competed at the White Rose Head, the first BUCS endorsed Yorkshire Universities head race. The race took place on the same course as the Yorkshire Head, with University crews from the region racing over 3K. Five crews raced at the event with three fresher crews racing their first race. Although HUBC did not win at the White Rose Head, every crew showed outstanding commitment and promising signs for the future.

HUBC at York Small Boats Head
For the first race of the year Hull University Boat Club ventured to the Yorkshire Small Boats Head. We took five men’s crews to the event that all competed with great confidence and pride for the boat club.
Two of the crews were entered into the intermediate coxed fours; the first with Beards, Werner, Trautrims, Barnes and Rego, the second crew with Reynolds, Davies, Edwards, Scott and Meredith. Sadly neither crew won this category though both put in a good race over the 3k course. We also had two more crews in the intermediate pairs. Coming in third place were Stuart Beards and Kieran Barnes who were beaten to second place be Joe Edwards and Kai Werner who narrowly missed the pole position. Our final race of the day came from the novice singles where Tim Sparks managed a solid race that sadly missed out on the prized first place.
Whilst the boat club did not come back with any tankards this time, the day was good fun for all and was enjoyed by all the crews and the boat club members who came along and valiantly supported the racing throughout the day.

HUBC Completes the Boston Marathon
With summer drawing to a close and the new academic year about to commence, a small number of HUBC members set off to Lincoln, to take part in the annual Boston Rowing Marathon, a tough 31 mile race from Lincoln to Boston. The composite Nov 4+, lead by Michael Waterfield, completed the race in 5hours 35mins, whilst the Intermediate 4x- (Stuart Beards, Louise Ramsey, Daniel Scott & Kieran Barnes) completed the race in 4hours 44mins. A special thanks go to Bernard Gammon for supporting the crews along the route, Runcorn Rowing Club for the quad, and Lincoln Rowing Club for the coxed four.

HUBC Wins Twice at York Summer Regatta
With University already finished, a small HUBC team consisting of Kieran Barnes, Alexander Trautrims and Max Rolfes went to York Summer Regatta on the 20th of June to race one last time before the summer break.
On a sunny day, Kieran put in a strong performance in the Novice Single and won his first heat by more than a length. He kept up this high standard and dominated the competition in every race. In the final, Kieran controlled his opponent and once again won clearly. Congratulations to the new Men’s Captain for losing his Novice Sculler status!
Alexander Trautrims and Max Rolfes teamed up with Richard Mehrtens and Joseph Stanhope of Lincoln RC for a composite four. They managed to win their heat and after a slow start in the semis went on to challenge their opponents and caught up more than a length. Unfortunately, they came second by a canvas.
Motivated by this dramatic defeat, Alex and Max set out for a highly interesting race in the IM2 pair. This time they had a faster start and after 400 metres pushed away from their opponents with strong and steady strokes. However it remained a very close race and Alex and Max secured their win by a determined finish. This was presumably the first all-German win for HUBC.
These brilliant results once more demonstrate the high standard the club has been able to deliver in the last year. During summer, the rowers will return to their home clubs where they will improve their technique to come back as more advanced rowers next year.
Special thanks go to Lincoln RC, who agreed to lend a pair to HUBC for the regatta.

Mighty HUBC run riot at Doncaster Regatta
The last regatta of the season is always an opportunity to showcase the vast array of talent that HUBC develops each year and on the basis of the results, all members can be extremely proud at another brilliant finale. Despite suffering losses to key personnel because of exam commitments, the club secured a total of four wins, coming from the inexperienced HUBC pair (Kelly and Strong), the mixed quad (Barnes, Little, Ramsey and Trautrims), the coxed four (O’Callaghan, Kelly, Strong and Gammon, coxed by Pereira-Rego), the men’s IM3 eight (Sparks, Gammon, Edwards, Kelly, O'Callaghan, Strong, Trautrims and Scott, coxed by Smith) and even the IM3 women’s coxed four (Chappell, Moseley, Baker and Ramsey, coxed by Pereira-Rego) were awarded pots to the surprise of everyone.
Congratulations go to the other crews that, although did not win, displayed potential for the future. Most notably, the entertaining novice men’s semi-final race saw Waterfield, Sharda, Davies and Abel, coxed by Meredith, buoyed through inspiration from the crowd, finishing strongly against the YSJ challengers. Furthermore, the novice singles (Edwards & Scott) and mixed novice double (Gammon and Moseley) did well.
Thank you to all those who attended to race and support, the busy day was hugely successfully; culminating the 2009/2010 season in archetypal HUBC style.

Teeside Regatta no competition for HUBC crews
Following the wonderful success of BUCS 2010 and with the weather finally reflecting the promise of regatta season, HUBC arrived at Stockton-on-tees excited and confident of racing competitively over the 850m Tees Regatta course. The challenge was to enhance the club dynamics and continue the forward momentum to gain those much desired British Rowing points. Thankfully, HUBC can boast victories in all three divisions of the penultimate regatta.
Hull B novice men’s crew of Pereira-Rego (cox), Waterfield, Sharda, Davies and Abel initiated proceedings. However, this amalgamation of rowers with no regular strokeman, struggled at the outset. Starting gingerly the scratch crew fell further behind after catching a crab. Nonetheless, a desperate push over the latter section led to a dramatic comeback. Only finishing second required the exhausted crew to immediately return to the start for the repercharge against Leeds BC. Astonishingly, the 4ths managed to adjust into a sensible race rhythm and won by three boat lengths. In the interim, Hull A novice men’s crew of Smith (cox), Edwards, Scott, Sparks and Wall, experienced no such problems and looked comfortable in qualification. The draw placed both Hull beginner teams together in the semi-final. With only the top two crews going through to the last stage, the fatigue from racing twice previously, in close succession, was apparent as Hull B rarely challenged. Yet, the physical strength and superior technical ability of the Hull A crew, in comparison to the rest of the field, carried them to outright victory. Another deserved win in the final upgraded their individual status to senior oarsmen, under British Rowing regulations.
With the standard set, the novice women’s crew looked to build upon a strong performance at BUCS. Along with University of York Boat Club, Yarm School appeared the major opposition. These schoolgirl rowers ought not to be underestimated – technical brilliance is fostered through gruelling coaching methods. Nonetheless, it was raw power from Pereira-Rego (cox), Chappell, Moseley, Baker and O’ Brein, that prevailed in a thrilling finale. The group hope to build on the successes in the beginner category as senior rowers.
In an attempt to demonstrate the diversity available in HUBC this season, several sculling crews were entered. Although no pots were acquired, the efforts of senior women, Ramsey and Little, who excruciatingly missed out on victory in the IM3 double and partook in a composite quad with two members from University of York Boat Club, must be recognised. Also, Wall and Scott competed in the IM3 men’s double.
The rivalry between the top two men’s senior crews continued in the IM3 coxed four division. Without regular stroke, President Stuart Beards, Hull A fielded an unusual compilation of Smith (cox) Rolfes, Trautrims, Edwards and Casserley. This amalgamated side still managed to grasp the British Rowing points in the bout over the shorter distance favourites, Hull B (Pereira-Rego (cox), O’Callaghan, Strong, Kelly and Barnes).
Lastly, the dominant HUBC pair of Rolfes and Casserley unsurprisingly furthered their incredible medal tally with another superb display, thus fulfilling a comprehensive routing at Tees Regatta.

BUCS 2010 - Nottingham
The annual British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) regatta is always the premier event on the HUBC rowing calendar. Following a mammoth amount of training, numerous 6am water sessions, two successful Easter training camps at Runcorn Rowing Club, competitive head races and gruelling circuit sessions, this season, all squads arrived at the Nottingham National Water Sports Centre confident of success at the biggest student rowing regatta in Europe.
Day 1 of racing began with early morning qualification sessions for both mens novice teams and the substantial progress in technique and composure, throughout the year, was evidential. The 3rd crew of Callum Smith (cox), Joe Edwards, Daniel Scott, Tim Sparks and Daniel Wall, somewhat predictably advanced to the heats with ease. Unfortunately, despite displaying sections of exceptional rowing calibre and finishing in the top 20 beginner crews in the UK, the 4ths of Tegan Pereira-Rego, Daniel Reynolds, Jai Sharda, Michael Waterfield and Sam Abel, narrowly missed out on entry to the next stage. Meanwhile the 3rds continued with a splendid vein of form with another committed performance. Yet, even with a remarkable personal best time of 7:36.19 they were unable to progress further, having fallen behind to the overall competition winners, Oxford Brookes, and credible contenders, Exeter (A), UWE (C), Newcastle (A) crews. An epic celebratory night in NOTT-ING-HAM was certainly in order!
Feeling buoyant with achievements thus far, the HUBC squad resumed their attempt for BUCS rowing domination on Day 2. In particular, the novice women’s crew, the surprise crew for the weekend, aroused the crowd with several extraordinary races. Under the guidance of experienced oarswoman and Female Captain, Louise Ramsey (cox), Rebecca Chappell, Laura Moseley, Kate O’Brien and Kayleigh Baker, the girls stormed through qualification and proved that superior fitness and crew gym sessions are dividential as they managed to push through the heats and come from behind on more than one occasion to reach the semi finals. If similar progress continues further next season the women’s squad will definitely be catching the attention of other clubs; perhaps even the boys at Liverpool University Boat Club.
Simultaneously, the infamous competition between the mens intermediate 1st and 2nd crews commenced. After battling amongst each other throughout the season, BUCS 2010 was to have the ultimate verdict as to who officially gained the coveted title of HUBC best coxed crew. Both campaigns began promisingly with qualification. Coincidently the teams met in the first heat. In a mouth watering contest of delightful rowing, Hull A, consisting of Callum Smith (cox), Stuart Beards, Alex Trautrims, Max Rolfes and Louis Casserley finished with a time of 6.56.93 to proceed to the semi-finals, whilst Hull B of Tegan Pereira-Rego, Jack O’Callaghan, Bradley Strong, Luke Kelly and Kieran Barnes, endured a frustrating race, in which even victory over an oxford crew was inadequate. Overall, the 1st crew failed to reach the final, but still concluded the contest within the top 12 intermediate crews in the UK.
Notably, Louise Ramsey and Sarah Little are also eligible for Hull University Union Half Colours having progressed to the semi finals of the women’s intermediate double and finishing 9th overall.
The final opportunity for attaining medals at BUCS rested upon the experienced HUBC intermediate pair. Having won all previous races, immense expectation surrounded the widely feared partnership of Max Rolfes and Louis Casserley. The mentality of ‘don’t try...do’ was palpable as a marvellous spectacle of master class oarsmanship propelled the crew comfortably to the final. The crowd erupted once again for the definitive climax, where the pair fought through the agony of another 2k stretch, to win a thoroughly deserved bronze medal.
On the whole, in victory or defeat, HUBC showed astonishing development on a national scale, concluding proceedings 34th out of 65 clubs in the Victor Ludorum results.

HORR
On Saturday 27th March Hull University Boat Club were proud to be able to send down the men's first eight to compete in one of the largest races in the country, the Head of the River Race. From Bow to stroke the crew involved were; Kieran Barnes, Jack O'Callaghan, Bradley Strong, Luke Kelly, Alexander Trautrims, Maximilian Rolfes, Louis Casserley, Stuart Beards with Callum Clement-Smith as the cox.
Starting low down in the position of 283 (out of a total of 400 crews that where entered) the boat eloquently stormed down the course over taking a total of twelve crews, whilst not being over taken once. Coming down the course the crew looked strong and fierce with Callum Clement-Smith steering through the busy river with ease and a brilliant line. The crew came down the course in a time of 19 minutes, 1.64 seconds, and placed 147th, having moved up 136 places, an overwhelming success for the all the men in the crew as well as the Boat Club as a whole.
Thanks go to Reading Rowing Club who lent an eight to the crew, as well as the rowers who opened their houses to even more members of the crew and to all those who supported the crew on this successful day.

South Yorkshire Head 2010 & Boston 2010
Doncaster was a busy day for all of the many crews involved. There was strong support from the Boat Club itself, as well as relatives who had travelled to cheer on the club. The club entered two women's crews as well as five men's crews.
The women's quad with Ramsey, Little, Moseley and Chappell came in third in the women's elite category, with the women's novice coxed four, Meredith, O'Brien, Wileman, Baker and Kenvin, placed ninth in their field. The men had an equally strong day coming in second (Beards, Casserley, Trautrims and Rolfes), forth (Gammon, Beards, Barnes, O'Callaghan) and ninth (Strong, Sparks, Hill and Scott) out of a field of fourteen in the IM3 coxed fours. The Novice coxed four (Edwards, Sharda, Abel and Waterfield) came third out of four. Hull had success from the mens IM3 pair, with Max Rolfes and Louis Casserley rowing to a high standard, keeping their recent winning streak intact.
The crews rowed well, showing real promise leading up to the Easter training camps and the biggest event in the HUBC calendar, BUCS, which is fast approaching.

Newark Head Race 6th December
Newark was the first rowing event of the season for Hull University Boat Club. With a total of nine entries the day was busy for all those involved and those who had come to support the club. The women's squad had a very successful day coming second in the women’s, intermediate 3 quad (Little, Moseley, Chappell, Ramsey) and third in the women's novice coxed four (Keesing, Meredith, O'Brien, Ramsey, coxed by Moseley).
The men's squad had an equally successful day with the second crew coming second in the intermediate 3 coxed fours (Gammon, Kelly, Strong, O'Callaghan, coxed by Smith), followed by the first crew in third position (Casserley, Rolfes, Barnes, Beards, coxed by Smith), and the thirds in eighth place(Yates, Sparks, Scott, Hill, coxed by Rego).
With a large number of men novices in the club two crews were entered into the novice coxed four category in Newark and they showed excellent determination through what they considered to be a most enjoyable first race experience coming in seventh (Abel, Waterfield, Hudson, Edwards, coxed by Wall) and eighth (Goldstraw, Prince, Sharda, Reynolds, coxed by Wall) place in their category.
Congratulations go to the senior men's coxless pair (Casserley and Rolfes) and novice men single sculls (Barnes), who successfully won the category giving the boat club the first wins of the year.
Thanks go to all members of the club and family of the rowers who came to support us all at Newark and to Sheffield who graciously leant us a boat for the women's quad to race in.

York Small Boats Head
Sadly York Small Boats Head was cancelled due to heavy rainfall bursting the banks by the York boat houses. However so as to still enjoy a full day of rowing somewhere different the committee organised a day at Doncaster RC where all the crews were able to go on the water whilst receiving training from a launch and some crews experienced using an eight for the first time this semester (and first time for all the novices).

Warrington Regatta
HUBC and HRC have a day out with Runcorn Rowing Club at Warrington Regatta.
As part of summer training Stuart Beards and Daniel Wall of HUBC have joined the ranks of Runcorn rowing club in the North West. Stuart and Daniel, rowing for both Runcorn and Hull University on the day, were joined by Emily Walczak of the newly formed Hull Rowing Club for an exciting day of racing at Warrington Regatta. So despite the overcast and drizzly British summer day they all rocked up to Warrington Rowing Club ready to face the competition.
The first race of the day was a straight final for the mixed novice Hull/Runcorn coxed four comprising of Stuart, Toni Edwards of Runcorn, Emily, Daniel and Calvin of Runcorn coxing. After the frantic late arrival of a member of the crew, there was very little time for a practice outing as they had originally planned. So as the sweep boat made up of predominantly scullers sat on the start line they were unsure of their chances. A slow (or rather unpracticed) start put the Runcorn-Hull crew 2 lengths behind the competition of Tretham R.C, but it was the crews powerful strokes that kicked in 200m into the race that saw them make their move on the Trentham crew. By 500m Hull/Runcorn were clearly pulling through the crew leading to a clear win and a pot!
The second race of the day was the Men’s novice double scull semi-final with Stuart and Daniel. This was due to be an interesting race as it was their first race together as a crew and Daniel's first ever race out of the coxing seat. However the few weeks of training at Runcorn and their fitness carried over from a year of HUBC training paid off and despite a very shaky start they pulled a comfortable win of 2 lengths over the Liverpool Victoria crew!
Next up for Hull was the Hull RC/ Hull University BC composite of Emily and Stuart in a mixed Intermediate 3 double against North Staffs RC. This was the crews second race of the season and after just missing out on a pot due to inexperience at Doncaster they were fired up to bring home some metal. Stuart has been working hard on his sculling at Runcorn RC while Emily has continued to train on the River Hull at Hull RC. Their hard work paid off winning their heat by 2 boat lengths.
As the day moved into the finals of the regatta the delight of Hull being in all its finals brought out the sun. As it shinned down onto the course the boys boated for their final in the double against North Staffs RC. The boys sculled well, looking even stronger than they had in their heat which led to a win by just a quarter of a length. A fantastic result for HUBC, seeing Stuart and Daniel losing their novice sculling status (something I’m sure will be celebrated in the traditional manner once the new academic year begins in October) and winning another pot.
Finally the last race, not only for Hull but of the day was the Hull RC/Hull University BC composite double. Tensions were high on the finish line; this is where the double had lost it at Doncaster Regatta. Not only was there the pressure of not wanting a repeat performance of Doncaster but also the pressure of wanting an unbeaten record for Hull University BC at Warrington Regatta and an unbeaten racing record for Hull RC. Northwich RC were quick off the start leaving Hull RC/Hull University BC trailing but at the 200m mark the Hull double settled into a nice strong rhythm putting in a push and pulling through the Northwich crew. As the crews passed the boathouse with 100m to go the Hull double had a good length up on Northwich but they weren’t giving up without a fight. Despite Northwich’s final push the Hull RC/Hull University BC crew maintained their length lead and held off Northwich winning their event by a boat length. Another pot for the Hull crews.
Overall a brilliant day was had by the Hull rowers, with a hat trick from Stuart winning all three of his events, Daniel losing his novice status on his first ever race (an accolade held by few) and a 100% success rate for the newly formed Hull Rowing club after Emily's races.

Doncaster Regatta 2009
The last regatta of the season is always an opportunity to display vast array of talent that the club develops each year and on the basis of the results all members can be extremely proud at another brilliant finale. Even the mayor of Doncaster himself recognised the arrival of HUBC! We came away with a total of four wins, coming from the mixed coxed quad (Flanagan, Little, Crossland, Moseley and coxed by Rego), the mixed coxed four (Walczak, Crone, Trautrims, Ramsey and coxed by Rego) and the women’s intermediate double (Ramsey and Walczak). However the highlight of the day came from the novice men’s four (Hill, Strong, Kelly, Gammon and coxed by Smith) who upgraded their status to senior oarsmen through victory over YSJ Rowing Club.
Congratulations go to the other crews that although did not win put on some brilliant races and showed great style and speed. These crews include the women’s novice double (Moseley and Little), the men’s novice quad (Flanagan, Crone, Beards and Crossland, racing with a Cox, Rego, in a coxless category due to a lack of coxless boats!), the men’s novice eight (Flanagan, Hill, Scott, Kelly, Gammon, Bull, Waterfield, Strong and coxed by Smith), the second men’s novice coxed four crew (Flanagan, Scott, Waterfield , Bull and coxed by Rego), the women’s quad (Ramsey, Little, Moseley and Walczak) and the two mixed intermediate doubles (Beards and Walczak, Ramsey and Crone).
Thank you to all those who attended to race and support, the busy day was hugely successfully and everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable time and end to the year. HUBC was seen celebrating late into the evening with some fantastic river diving displays; some would say we all had fun.

Tees Regatta 2009
Due to the debacle that is exam period, the number of rowers available was greatly reduced, leaving the selectors grasping to reshuffle crews. Nevertheless, Tees Regatta held good success for the HUBC team and despite not receiving any wins; we were successfully through to the finals in the majority of our racing categories. Overcoming the temperamental weather (a thunderstorm delaying racing before clearing completely moments later), our crews had an enjoyable day. In the intermediate 3, coxed fours (Beards, Casserley, Trautrims, Gammon and coxed by Smith) HUBC came a strong second and in the novice coxed four crew they came a successful third (Beards, Waterfield, Kelly, Scott and coxed by Smith). The women’s novice coxed four similarly came a solid second place (Ramsey, Little, Moseley, Threlfall and coxed by Rego). Another race that Hull University Boat Club participated in was the mixed intermediate 3 double (Ramsey and Casserley), which although not placing on the podium had a good race; proving that all ours rowers are strong competition for other crews.

BUCS 2009
The weekend of the British University and College Sport was a big event that after such a difficult year HUBC was proud to participate in, surprisingly with our own boats. Arriving in Nottingham and setting up camp the racing started early at 8.30 on Saturday Morning with the two men’s novice crews participating in the time trials. Though sadly not qualifying both crews put on a good show and were not far behind the crews that went on to race some more. The crews consisted of Hill, Yates, Kelly, Gammon (coxed by Wall) and Flanagan, Scott, Waterfield and Ross (coxed by Rego).
Better results came from the intermediate coxed four (Beards, Trautrims, Crone, Casserley and coxed by Smith), who successfully qualified on the Sunday and went onto compete in a heat and then into the Semi finals. Despite rowing very well they did not progress to the final. The girls’ intermediate double (Ramsey and Walczak) had a similar successful day of races competing successfully all the way through to the semi final, sadly losing out to an elusive place in the final.
Overall the weekend was a good success for the club, which despite the many problems that had effected the year, could still receive such good times and have many successfully races with a large group of supporters cheering on the rowers.
