Why Join HUBC

Rowing is undoubtedly a university sport. Whether you wish to encounter the thrill of racing at BUCS, row recreationally or be involved with the vibrant social environment, then HUBC is perfect for individuals of all skills and fitness types to fulfil the ultimate university experience. View the respective pages for more guidance on training and socials.

How to sign up throughout the year

Although it was encouraged to meet the squad at the Fresher’s Fair (28th September), this does limit you from registering at any other point during the year and there ought to be no significant disadvantage to potential rowing success.

There are several ways in which this can be done.

  • Attend one of the Tuesday evening club circuit sessions from 7-8pm in the sports and fitness centre and stay behind for the squad meeting.
  • Attend one of the Friday evening club circuit sessions in the sports and fitness centre and stay behind for the squad meeting (circuit times changes yearly so please see the training page for details).
  • Otherwise email the club president for further information regarding other potential places join.

To locate the sports and fitness centre turn right on exiting the students union, follow the path through the cricket field and observe the signpost highlighting the gym. Look out for a club member waiting at the reception desk. Water sessions are tide depended.

Don’t fancy rowing, why not cox?

The role of a coxswain within a crew is to:

  • Ensure the safety of the boat and rowers on the water through reliable steering
  • Command the actions of the boat
  • Provide motivation and encouragement to the crew
  • Assess situations and make any necessary tactical decisions
  • Direct the team and organise outings
  • Be responsible for the boat

Even though coxes do not tend to row competitively they are a fundamental feature of the team and even share any awards and any achievements of the crew. The opportunity to row is always available and many do.

So that is a NO to rowing and NO to coxing then join HUBC as a social member

Rowing can also be a recreational sport and we appreciate that university is a time for fun! Every year it is common for members to enjoy the social aspect of the club. We encourage friends of rowers to come and enjoy our Wednesday night themed events. For details please CLICK HERE to view the social page.
